Do I need a Food Science degree to be SQF Practitioner?

The Truth About Becoming an SQF Practitioner—No Degree Required

“Do I need a food science degree to be an SQF Practitioner?”

The short answer is no—you do not need a food science degree. And I say this confidently, not just because the SQF Code says so, but because I’ve personally trained many individuals without science degrees who are now leading their own SQF programs. It is definitely beneficial to have a food science or science degrees.

However, that food science or science-specific knowledge can be acquired through short courses and HACCP training. There is also no guarantee someone with a science degree will be competent at implementing SQF programs.

What Does the SQF Code Say About Practitioner Qualifications?

Minimum Requirements for an SQF Practitioner

  1. Employed by the site (meaning you work for the company that is SQF certified)
    2. Hold a position of responsibility for the food safety system
    3. Completed HACCP training recognized by the Codex Alimentarius or equivalent
    4. Demonstrate competency in:
    – Implementing and maintaining HACCP-based food safety plans
    – Understanding the SQF Code and its implementation

Nowhere does it say you must have a food science degree, or list a degree requirements.

What Matters More Than a Degree?

Real-World Food Safety Knowledge

Being an SQF Practitioner is about understanding how to build, run, and improve a food safety system. You need to know how to interpret data, assess risks, write procedures, train staff, and prepare for audits.
